Outside,a crowd of pro-Palestiniandemonstrators projected the slogan“from the river to the sea”onto the facade of Big Ben, drawingdenunciations from thosewho view it as a rallying cry forthe eradication of Israel.2 The chaotic scenesin London last weekcaptured how Israel’swar in Gaza is reverberatingfar beyond the MiddleEast. From the UnitedStates to Europe, thebrutal October 7 attackby Hamas militants andIsrael’s devastating responsehas inflamed passions, upended politics, and heightenedtensions within Muslim and Jewishcommunities.Newly elected pro-Palestine MP George Galloway stands in front of a campaign banner in February.| Photo: James Speakman/Empics/Picture Alliance3 The fights are not only over intractablequestions of war, peace, and moral justice. In Britain, politicalparties and the public are notactually that divided over how torespond to Gaza; a solid majorityback a cease-fire. Instead, the humanitariancrisis in Gaza has alsobecome a cudgel for opponents tobrandish against each other.4 The governing ConservativeParty seized on anti-Israel commentsmade by a Labour Partyparliamentary candidate to accuseLabour of failing to stampout a legacy of antisemitism in itsranks. Labour pointed to disparagingcomments by a Tory lawmakerabout London’s Muslimmayor as evidence of simmeringIslamophobia among Conservatives.5 Both parties maneuveredfuriously in Parliament over thecease-fire resolution, not becausethey differed much on the substancebut because the Conservativessaw a chance to surfacerifts within Labour over Britain’sinitial backing of Israel. “It’s anexample of how a really seriousissue has been distorted by theprism of party politics in Britain,”said Steven Fielding, an emeritusprofessor of political history atthe University of Nottingham.6 In the U.S., anger amongsome Democrats at President JoeBiden’s robust support of Israelfueled a protest vote in Michigan’sprimary this week, raisingquestions about whether the warcould alter the outcome of a closelyfought presidential election. In France, President EmmanuelMacron has been forced to tackaway from his pro-Israel stanceContinued on page 12€3,50 [a,f] CHF5,40 [ch]0 TO JOLTerschüttern — to be caught up ins.th. s. in etw. verstricken — to alter verändern1 lawmaker Abgeordnete(r) — to jeer johlen— to boo buhen — vote Abstimmung — tocall for fordern — cease-fire Waffenstillstand —Gaza Strip Gazastreifen — to project projizieren— denunciation Anprangerung — rallying crySchlachtruf; Parole — eradication Vernichtung2 – 3 to capture einfangen; (fig) aufzeigen — toreverberate widerhallen; nachhallen — militantKämpfer(in); s.w.u.
