22 News & Topics December 2022 | World and Press How to win pub trivia QUIZ A quiz pro shares his tips. By Brydon Coverdale 1 “WHICH STATEfinished last in the Sheffield Shield cricket competition this year?” Pressure does funny things to people. I’ve sat in the ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’ hot seat across from Eddie McGuire. I’ve had my nerves shredded trying to win hundreds of thousands of dollars on ‘Million Dollar Minute’. I’ve spent seven years as a chaser, standing between contestants and their money on ‘The Chase Australia’. 2 I was also a cricket journalist for a decade, and there’s no pressure quite like the burden of your pub trivia team looking at you expectantly when the host asks a question that should be your bread and butter, and you haven’t got a clue about the answer. When that Sheffield Shield question was asked, I felt like Anthony Albanese being grilled on unemployment figures. “Ah, sorry, I’m not sure what it is.” 3 My team that night was made up of my fellow Australian chasers, Issa “The Supernerd” Schultz, Matt “Goliath” Parkinson, and Cheryl “The Tiger Mum” Toh, as well as Cheryl’s regular trivia teammate, Alan. We are so rarely all together at once that we thought pub trivia would be a fun bonding experience. 4 We did win the night and defended our reputations, but we also showed ourselves to be human. We couldn’t remember the name of the actor who plays Jay in ‘Clerks’ and ‘Mallrats’ (Jason Mewes), picked the wrong year for the release of Norah Jones’s “Don’t Know Why”, and … umm … well … failed to name a certain cricket team. A group participates in a Boston pub’s trivia night. | Photo: Getty Images/Boston Herald 5 I know we missed these questions because Cheryl, who is a lawyer, keeps detailed notes and sends out emails to her usual trivia teammates with a list of questions they answered incorrectly. It’s an excellent way of remembering for next time, should the question ever come up again. I’ve always found that writing things down helps my recall, which is why writing practice questions is for me the most effective trivia training technique. 6 Taking notes might not be everyone’s idea of fun, but there are other ways to improve your pub trivia performance. For starters, if you’re not sure, guess the “percentage answer”. Which ocean? The Pacific’s the biggest, try that. Which American city? Say New York. Which rubbish state cricket team? I should have known it was South Australia, the perennial wooden spooners. 7 But success at pub trivia is about more than just guessing. What you want is a team full of complementary strengths, not a group where everyone knows the 1977 Grand Final winner, but nobody has heard of the Kid Laroi. Once you’ve got your crack trivia squad assembled, there are some dos and don’ts. 8 Do listen to the question properly, and ask for it to be repeated if you’re unclear. I was once at a pub quiz in London when a team thought the host had asked for Britain’s biggest carnival, and answered Notting Hill. They were baffled that the correct answer was “badger”, until they twigged that it was Britain’s biggest carnivore. 9 Don’t argue the point with the host. Pub trivia is meant to be fun. You might be playing for a roast lamb counter meal, but not the whole sheep station. And remember, the host is the one who controls the scoring, so aggravate him or her at your peril. Your pedantry may gain you a point here, but you might mysteriously lose a point somewhere else. 10 Do listen to your teammates. The worst person on a pub trivia 1 A ROWhas broken out over plans for what would be the world’s largest cable car to ferry skiers to resorts in Utah. The project, expected to cost 0 million, would create an eight-mile system at Little Cottonwood Canyon near Salt Lake City. The cars would carry 32 passengers and arrive every two minutes, taking about half an hour from the city itself to the Alta and Snowbird resorts. 2 Supporters of the project, which has the backing of the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), say it would reduce congestion on roads that become clogged with skiers. 3 Opponents include environmentalists worried about the team is the steamroller who talks over his (the steamroller is nearly always a man) teammates and dismisses out of hand their suggested answers, which are probably correct. A good team brings everyone into the discussion and tries to work it out together. 11 Don’t get too drunk. By all means, have a few drinks, enjoy a meal, have some fun, and support the pub that’s paying for the trivia. Venues have had a rough couple of years; the more money across the bar at a trivia night, the better for everyone. But don’t get so wasted that you look at Elvis Costello on the photo page and think he’s the Proclaimers. … © 2022 Guardian News and Media Ltd Klassensätze gibt’s im Sammelabo. There will be a public consultation, and funding could take years. Alternatives considered by officials included widening the two-lane road to the resorts, as well as a cog railway system. 4 The cable car system would be the world’s longest, surpassing the 5.6-mile Zlatibor Gold Gondola Lift in Serbia. World and Press | December 2022 Lifestyle 23 Why Barbiecore decor is having a hot-pink moment LIFESTYLE Barbie has long been an icon of fashion and mod decorating. Now, the Dreamhouse look is coming to real homes. By Jura Koncius Barbie relaxes on the pink sofa in the latest Barbie Dreamhouse. | Photo: Mattel 1 HEIDI MARLER’Staste in decorating has always gravitated toward pastels and vibrant pinks. She has a pink Chesterfield sofa. And the centerpiece of her kitchen is a pink Smeg refrigerator – alongside pink cabinets, pink walls, and a pink microwave. “My home is my happy place,” says Marler, who works as an end-oflife caregiver in Essex, England. After a recent post of home photos on her Instagram, @home_n_ tidy_with_heidi_, commenters declared her space very “Barbiecore.” 2 Since she debuted in 1959, Barbie has been an icon of fashion and mod decorating, as well as a symbol of fun. Now, with a live-action movie about her set to debut next summer, her look is everywhere, it seems. Barbiecore fashion is drenched in hot pink, and now that girly-girl vibe is seeping into living rooms, kitchens, and bedrooms. “I didn’t realize my obsession was on trend,” says Marler, who was tickled pink by the news. “Barbie was the girl that could pull anything out of the bag. I would like to say she reminds me a little bit of myself.” 3 It’s been a tough couple of years, and consumers are ready to make a bold statement as they emerge from socially distanced lifestyles. That’s where Barbie comes in. “People want to escape, and they are latching onto something colorful and nostalgic and playful,” says Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute. “When you think about color being a language that expresses what is taking place, this pink and its association with Barbie is about being daring and unafraid and taking chances.” 4 When photos of the upcoming Greta Gerwig live-action ‘Barbie’ movie from Warner Bros. – with Margot Robbie in the title role and Ryan Gosling as Ken – trickled out earlier this summer, social media influencers were ready to embrace the beloved plastic doll and her look. As of Tuesday, TikTok has registered 19 million views for #barbiecore. 5 Katie Sturino, founder of the beauty company Megababe, says she has always loved Barbie. Now, her Palm Beach, Fla., condo is an homage of sorts to the Barbie Dreamhouse. “I don’t know if it seeped into my subconscious from when I was little, but I always loved pink,” Sturino says. In December 2020, she and her husband bought the place in Florida to escape pandemic isolation in freezing-cold Manhattan. Excited about finally having her own laundry room, she covered the walls in Wallshoppe’s “Rainbow Barbie” paper in the color bubblegum. She got a pink Lovesac sectional and installed pink-andwhite-striped curtains. When she heard about Barbiecore in June, she texted a friend who also loves pink: “This is our time.” “I have been ready for this moment, even though I didn’t know it was coming,” she says. 6 When Etsy trend expert Dayna Isom Johnson saw the photo of Robbie behind the wheel of her hot-pink Chevy Corvette convert- Adding pink accessories is a quick way to bring Barbiecore into your home. | Photo: Etsy/Junebeginnings ible, she knew that mood-boosting colors in home design would bubble up. “Everyone started embracing that color,” Johnson says. “It’s ultrafeminine.” Searches on Etsy for hot-pink home and livingrelated items are up 21 percent in the past three months compared with last year, Johnson says. “It’s all about embracing those vibrant hues and trying to think back to nostalgic times, when life was a little simpler and sunnier and a little more carefree,” she adds. If you want to jump on the Barbiecore bandwagon, she suggests starting with something small, such as a vase, pillow, or candle, because “it’s a very bright tone.” 7 If you’re ready to embrace pink paint, choose carefully. Andrea Magno, director of color marketing and development for Benjamin Moore, says pink has gone more mainstream in recent years. “It has broken away from that little girl kind of connotation,” she says. But Magno cautions that “a lot of colors may be fun for a skirt or nail polish, but when it’s color on the wall, it should be something livable.” … 8 Kim Culmone, Mattel’s senior vice president and global head of design for Barbie and fashion dolls, says Barbie has always been a trailblazer. “She owned her first Dreamhouse in 1962, before women could open their own bank accounts.” 9 The original Dreamhouse was a mid-century model with slim-line furniture made of cardboard. Her latest Dreamhouse is still very modern, and it has an indoor/outdoor living focus, with a pink pool slide and a rooftop deck, because “Barbie needs a little spot for relaxing, since she does have over 200 careers, so she is very busy,” Culmone adds. Barbie’s style, she says, is timeless. “Barbie is always of the moment, because she continues to evolve.” 10 When Barbie turned 50 in 2009, designer Jonathan Adler created a 3,500-square-foot reallife Barbie Malibu Dream House in – where else – Malibu. “There was a lot of black patent leather and white and pink,” Adler recalls. “And I had a chandelier made out of Barbie’s hair.” There was also a closet filled with dozens of pink shoes and rugs monogrammed with the letter B. 11 As for Barbiecore, Adler says, “the great thing about Barbie is that she is whatever you want her to be, from Barbie the surfer to Barbie the business executive.” In interiors, he says, Barbiecore “is a way for grown women to express their inner girl and a nostalgia for more innocent times.” … © 2022 The Washington Post 0 – 1 TO HAVE a moment gerade voll angesagt sein — mod trendig — to gravitate toward s.th. “"grœvIÆteIt‘ zu etw. tendieren — pastel “"pœst´l‘ Pastellfarbe — vibrant “"vaIbr´nt‘ leuchtend — centerpiece (fig) Kernstück — end-of-life caregiver Sterbebegleiter(in) 2 – 3 to debut “"deIbju‘ auf den Markt kommen — drenched in in etw. getränkt — girly-girl supermädchenhaft — vibe Atmosphäre — to seep into eindringen — to be tickled pink s. wie ein Schneekönig freuen — to emerge from h.: hinter s. lassen — socially distanced ohne persönlichen Kontakt — to latch onto s.th. s. an etw. festhalten — to be daring etw. wagen — to take chances Risiken eingehen 4 – 5 upcoming demnächst herauskommend — to trickle out an die Öffentlichkeit kommen — to embrace begeistert aufnehmen — founder “"faUnd´‘ Gründer(in) — condo Eigentumswohnung — homage “"hÅmIdZ‘ Huldigung — … of sorts e-e Art … — subconscious “Æsøb"kÅnS´s‘ Unterbewusstsein — laundry room “"lO…ndri‘ Waschküche — sectional Wohnlandschaft; Sofagarnitur 6 – 7 convertible Cabrio — mood-boosting die Stimmung aufhellend — to bubble up aufsteigen; h.: in Mode kommen — hues “hju…‘ Farbtöne — carefree sorglos — to jump on the bandwagon (fig) e-n Modetrend mitmachen — to go more mainstream breitere Akzeptanz finden — connotation Assoziation — to caution “"kO…S´n‘ warnen — s.th. livable “"lIv´b´l‘ etw., mit dem man leben kann 8 – 9 senior vice president Vorstand/Vorständin — trailblazer Wegbereiter(in) — mid-century im Möbel- und Architekturstil der 1940er- bis 1960er-Jahre — slim-line mit klaren Linien — pool slide Poolrutsche — rooftop deck Dachterrasse — of the moment auf der Höhe der Zeit — to evolve “I"vÅlv‘ s. weiterentwickeln 10 – 11 3,500 square feet ca. 325,3 m 2 — patent leather “ÆpeIt´nt "leD´‘ Lackleder — monogrammed “"mÅn´grœmd‘ mit e-m Monogramm versehen — business executive “Ig"zekj´tIv‘ Manager(in) — interiors Innenräume
