Übungen|Sprechen By Ben Clatworthy 1 NUMBER-ONE singles are shorter and slower, while key changes and fades have almost disappeared, analysis for the UK chart’s 70th anniversary has found. 2 Some characteristics have barely altered over time – females are still outnumbered by male and mixed acts – although there has been a long-term trend towards more hits in minor keys, while time signatures are increasingly four beats in a bar. Changes in taste help explain some findings, though “the advance of technology and new ways of working in music” are also likely to be responsible, experts said. 3 The analysis examined all 0 – 3 KEY CHANGETonartwechsel; wesentliche Veränderung — musicologist Musikwissenschaftler(in) — fade; s.w.u. fade-out Ausblenden; Fade-out — to be outnumbered zahlenmäßig unterlegen sein — minor key 1,404 releases to reach number one from the very first, “Here in My Heart” by Al Martino, to the latest, “Anti-Hero” by Taylor Swift. 4 One of the biggest changes has been the length of songs. The average length of No 1s passed three minutes for the first time in 1967 and four minutes in 1984. It peaked at an average of four minutes and 16 seconds in 1997, thanks to songs such as “The Drugs Don’t Work” by The Verve (5 min, 2 sec) and “D’You Know What I Mean?” by Oasis (7 min, 21 sec), but has since fallen, dropping to three minutes and seven seconds in 2019. 5 Fade-outs have also gone out of fashion, from appearing on 93 per cent of No 1s in 1971 and 100 Page 15 | Across 3 IRRIGATION • 4 SHORTFALL • 6 DIVULGE • 7 POTENT • 8 DISPARATE • 10 VANISH • 11 MONETISE • 15 CAPTION • 17 CHART • 18 LEGISLATURE • 19 SPECIMEN • 20 REFUSENIK solution Down 1 YIELD • 2 PROPERTY • 5 ASTOUND • 7 PUNGENT • 9 ILLUMINATE • 12 OFFENDER • 13 EMERGE • 14 WOODLAND • 16 TOXIN Taylor Swift poses with awards won at the 2022 American Music Awards. | Photo: Jordan Strauss/AP/Picture Alliance per cent in 1983 to none at all in 2011 and on only 23 since then. 6 “Many changes are due to the advance of technology, which has upended previous ways of working in music production and composition,” said James Masterton, a chart analyst and historian. “When you are doing it organically by playing live instruments, your instinct is to change things up a little to stop a song becoming tedious – and once upon a time that meant changing key. Now everything is on a computer screen, you can be more subtle and shift the harmonics instead.” © The Times, London/News Licensing This article originally appeared in The Times, London.
