6 Britain February 1 2023 | World and Press Wales asks Harry Potter fans to quit leaving socks on Dobby’s grave ENVIRONMENT Dobby, the beloved house-elf in Harry Potter, was freed by a sock. mit Audiodatei By María Luisa Paúl 1 DOBBY ISa free elf – so he technically doesn’t need the tons of socks “Potterheads” have left at his grave on a beach in western Wales. For more than a decade, the most serious of Harry Potter fans have flocked to Freshwater West to pay their respects to the pint-size house-elf and loyal friend of Harry Potter. The beach was the backdrop for Dobby’s final moments in 2010’s ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.’ 2 But 12 years of fan tributes have essentially caused an environmental hazard at the film location, Welsh officials say. The growing collection of mementos and painted pebbles is a nuisance, according to a group that assessed the area as part of an eight-month review of the site. That includes the pile of socks, an item of clothing that helps Dobby The memorial for Dobby at Wales’s Freshwater West Beach. | Photo: Matthew Horwood/Getty Images earn his freedom from a life of servitude in the series. 3 Fearing the beach’s ecosystem would be harmed, environmental officials considered tearing down the memorial. But after some deliberation, a decision was made last week to keep the gravesite – with a caveat that no more gifts be left for the slain elf. Dobby’s final resting place will remain “for people to enjoy.” “The Trust is asking visitors to only take photos when visiting the memorial to help protect the wider landscape,” officials said in a news release. 4 In ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1,’ Freshwater West is the beach to which Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Dobby escape at the end of the movie. And – if you somehow managed to eschew the book series for 25 years – it’s also the scene where the loyal elf dies after saving the wizard crew. On the beach Dobby described with his final breaths as “such a beautiful place to be with friends,” a wooden cross set atop a mound of painted rocks now marks his grave, along with a stone like the one Harry left to memorialize his friend that reads: “HERE LIES DOBBY A FREE ELF.” 5 The beach in Pembrokeshire, Wales, is a long strip of winding dunes and exposed rocky reefs. The legally protected conservation area is home to a host of wildlife, including lizards, gray seals, porpoises, and rare ground-nesting birds. Though films like ‘Deathly Hallows’ and Ridley Scott’s version of ‘Robin Hood’ have featured the beach, it’s also the site of a World War IIera maritime tragedy and one of the best Welsh surfing spots. 6 Having it now known as Dobby’s resting place has become problematic, according to the National Trust, a conservation charity that cares for historic properties and landmarks – especially when some 75,000 people flock to the beach each year, often exceeding capacity and sometimes leaving behind tributes to the fictional character. “Items like socks, trinkets, and paint chips from painted pebbles could enter the marine environment and food chain and put wildlife at risk,” the charity said in a statement. … 7 On Wednesday, Wizarding World, the official Harry Potter fan hub, begged Muggles – those non-magic folks – to leave no trace when commemorating a house-elf so beloved that even author J.K. Rowling apologized for killing him. Referencing the moment Dobby’s former cruel master mistakenly presented him with an article of clothing, which frees enslaved house-elves, the Wizarding World requested that fans comply with Welsh officials’ pleas to leave the beachside gravesite a sock-free zone. “Lucius Malfoy might’ve left Dobby a sock, but let’s not leave anything on our coastlines!” Wizarding World wrote in an Instagram post. © 2022 The Washington Post 0 – 2 TECHNICALLY eigentlich — to flock strömen — to pay one’s respects to s.o. By Gwyn Topham 1 BRITISH AIRWAYS’male pilots and cabin crew are to be allowed to have piercings and wear makeup for the first time, after the airline updated its guidelines with non-gender-specific rules. All employees in uniform can wear mascara, false eyelashes, and earrings from Monday, as well as carry accessories including handbags, an internal memo told staff. 2 Staff are urged to use “subtle shades” of makeup and aim for a “natural look”, according to the updated rules. Nail polish is permitted for all, although black and neon nails are still off-limits. “Man buns” will also be permitted under updated hair grooming rules. It follows similar moves by rivals, notably Virgin Atlantic, to update its policies to reflect the diversity of modern society. 3 The national carrier is also believed to be trying to update its image to reflect its branding campaign, “A British Original”, which it says is a celebration of the airline’s people, customers, and the nation; it is also hoping to boost staff morale after the layoffs and pay cuts imposed during the pandemic. 4 BA said: “We are proud of all of our colleagues at British Airways, and we are committed to an inclusive working environment. We have worked with our people to create updated guidelines for grooming, beauty, and accessories, allowing our colleagues to bring the best, most authentic version of themselves to work every day.” 5 The carrier still insists on a greater level of restraint than Male pilots and cabin crew can now have man buns and pierced ears at British Airways. | Photo: Caia Image/Getty Images

World and Press | February 1 2023 Britain 7 Second homes and Brexit pushing Welsh language to ‘tipping point’ WALES The chair of the Commission for Welsh-speaking Communities fears anglicisation could put the Welsh language out of community use. mit Audiodatei By Steven Morris 1 THE “anglicisation” of Welshspeaking villages and towns caused by newcomers snapping up homes after COVID, together with the economic stress of Brexit and the cost of living crisis, is pushing the Welsh language to a “tipping point”, the head of a new commission established to address the situation has warned. rival Virgin Atlantic, which recently said its staff could choose whichever uniform they prefer to wear, regardless of gender. BA’s insistence on retaining genderspecific uniforms for staff has not changed. Virgin, earlier this year, also changed its guidelines to allow cabin crew to have visible tattoos. It first relaxed rules forcing female crew to wear makeup in 2019. 2 Simon Brooks, chair of the Commission for Welsh-speaking Communities, said that unless action were taken, there was a danger that Welsh as a community language could soon be lost in some of its traditional heartlands. “What we face is an important moment in history,” he said. “Lots of things have been going on in a short period of time. You’ve had Brexit, which is a huge economic 0 – 3 TIPPING POINTKipppunkt; (fig) Abgrund — chair; s.w.u. head Vorsitzende(r) — anglicisation Anglisierung — to snap up (coll) aufkaufen — heartland Kernland — jolt Schock — to gather pace Fahrt aufnehmen — to thrive h.: e-n Aufschwung erleben — to accelerate beschleunigen 4 – 6 intervention Einschreiten — to launch a call e-n Aufruf starten — regeneration (städt.) Qatar Airways, the major shareholder in British Airways, has long imposed strict working conditions and uniform rules on its flight attendants – “terminating” crew employment in the past and effectively forcing deportations for non-visible tattoos and other violations. 8 Qatar and BA last year have also established a large global joint route network, with increas- A sign welcomes visitors to Wales in both English and Welsh. | Photo: David Williams/ Getty Images munity and used in everyday interaction – thrive. “When everybody speaks the language, you use it. When another language is introduced, you can get to a point where the majority language becomes much more dominant, and that can happen very quickly.” He said he had noticed a change in his own coastal village in Gwynedd, North Wales. “The language in the street has become more English. That has been accelerated by the COVID crisis.” 4 Brooks said Welsh would still be spoken by a lot of people across Wales, but without intervention it could be at risk as a community language. He added: “The decline of Welsh as a community language is important to all of Britain. It’s the last Celtic language spoken at the community level. It’s important in terms of broader cultural diversity.” 5 The commission is launching a call for evidence from citizens 7 – 8 a raft of e-e ganze Palette an — discretionary nach eigenem Ermessen festgelegt — council tax premium Erhöhung der Kommunalsteuer — primary residence Erstwohnsitz — associate professor Hochschuldozent(in) jolt, then the pandemic, which led to a race for space. To my mind, anglicisation has gathered pace. There can be a tipping point in terms of language use. The fear is that a lot of these communities are at that tipping point.” 3 Brooks said the “snowball effect” helped community languages – which he defined as a language spoken by many or most people in the local coming numbers of codeshare flights and allowing frequent flyers to earn air miles or points on each other’s flights. 9 Asked whether male pilots and crew wearing makeup and accessories would be welcomed on flights operating in and out of Doha, BA declined to comment further. Qatar Airways was contacted for comment. © 2022 Guardian News and Media Ltd and organisations on issues that affect Welsh-speaking communities, from housing and education to community development and regeneration. Brooks said the survival of the language in second-home hotspots, such as coastal villages in Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire, was already critical. “You can have 40 or 50% of housing stock tied up in second homes. At that point, a community is not viable. It can’t survive.” 6 He said Welsh language heartlands were often economically deprived. “They are on the periphery of the UK, a long way from the marketplaces of Britain and Europe. Historically, many areas face the same post-industrial problems as places like the north of England.” Brooks said the stresses of Brexit and the cost of living crisis were pushing Welsh speakers out. 7 The Labour-led Welsh government has been bringing in a raft of measures designed to stop the Welsh language heartlands being hollowed out by the rise in second-home ownership, including allowing local authorities to raise discretionary council tax premiums for second homes to 300% and forcing homeowners to get planning permission to change a property’s classification from a primary residence to a second home. 8 Brooks, associate professor at the School of Management at Swansea University, said that as well as examining the secondhomes issue, the commission would look at subjects ranging from tackling long-term structural disadvantage, to how tourism should be managed and how the language could be kept alive in the farming community. … © 2022 Guardian News and Media Ltd Glossar Neu!
